About SSHAW

SHROPSHIRE'S SEXUAL HEALTH AWARENESS WORKSHOPS

SSHAW provides workshops within secondary schools throughout the county of Shropshire. Nine seperate workshops are facilitated to Year 9 (13 years) upwards. These workshops are:

  • Safer sex and STIs
  • Contraception
  • HIV/AIDS Awareness
  • Single gender Male and Female
  • Sexual Health
  • Risks Rights, and Responsibilities
  • Teenage Pregnancy
  • Sexuality

Programmes for schools are individually tailored to meet both curriculum requirements and time restrictions. SSHAW currently works within 22 schools accessing approximately 5000 young people which is 62% of schools within Telford and Wrekin and 64% in Shropshire. During an Ofsted inspection at a school in Telford and Wrekin, a SSHAW workshop with Year 11's was observed and it scored "excellent" overall for content, teaching methods and student participation.

SSHAW adheres to Department of Health and Education guidelines of an holistic approach to sex education in schools. All workshops are relevant, age appropriate and are designed to challenge and inform young people.

"SSHAW is one of the most valuable resources I have to support my school's SRE programme"

"I am really grateful that my students have SSHAW to provide knowledge and expertise to ensure that sensitive information is given fully, accurately and with authority. I am sure that it will have helped them all to cope with whatever the future might bring"

"Your support and information were greatly appreciated and the students benefitted enormously from your visits"

"We are very grateful for your input into upper school PHSE which has been very worthwhile"

"The workshops were very informative and well received by pupils"

"Many, many thanks for your work with our Year 11 pupils; the feedback from both staff and pupils was 100% positive"

"We are so appreciative of your time, enthusiasm and understanding"

"Our frequent interaction and regular use of SSHAW has always been accessible, beneficial and valuable to both staff and pupils alike"

Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology (SCAT) Second Year Performing Arts Department Performance

The last two years have seen partnership working between SSHAW and SCAT to present a drama production for World Aids Day. These have been performed on campus and then taken on a tour of local schools to provide students with HIV/STI prevention information.

The performances took place to rave reviews and evaluations and the funding for the project was provided by Connexions.

Many thanks to all the students and tutors who took part.

The SSHAW project is co-ordinated by Lyn Stepanian who can be contacted through the SB&BP office.
